New School Rising: Mount Si High School steel framework goes up; SES gym expansion starts soon

If you haven’t driven by Mount Si High School since school let out in June, you might just do a double take as you travel down Meadowbrook Way.

Construction on the new, rebuilt high school has gone from underground stabilization and concrete foundation work, to steel beams being erected and the shape of the new school rising into the blue summer sky.

Mount Si High School Rebuild Update

The Snoqualmie Valley School District released a July construction update saying General Contractor Spee West is making good progress on installing the future school’s steel structural framework.

The steel installation for the Freshman Campus building – “Area A” and closest to the intersection of Meadowbrook Way and Park Street – is just about complete. Crews have also have a lot of the steel framing for “Area B” well underway, while steel fabrication for Area C moves along nicely.

According to SVSD, construction of the new high school remains on schedule.

The new raised, three-story building (with parking space underneath) will be 355,000 sq. ft. and have capacity for 2,300 students. The majority of the school will open in fall 2019.

Over the 2019 summer break, and as the new building prepares to open, the old school and gym will be demolished to make way for new parking lots, bus lanes and baseball fields on the property’s south side. During the 2019-20 school year, the new Performing Arts Center (PAC) will be built on the site of the old gymnasium. The last step, from September 2020 – January 2021, involves demolishing the old PAC, replacing it with more parking spaces.

SES Gym Expansion Update

Another construction update:  SVSD selected a general contractor for the Snoqualmie Elementary School expansion project. Redmond-based Kassel Construction was awarded the contract and will be starting work soon. The district estimates the project will be complete by year-end.

The MSHS rebuild and the SES gym expansion were funded by a February 2015 voter approved $244 million school bond.
